We believe everyone is a leader

Every individual leads themselves as evidenced by:

  • the power of the choices we make
  • the boldness of character we build
  • the gift of compassion we give

How well are you consciously leading yourself, and leading those you have the privilege to influence?

The RISE Project is a highly interactive, youth leadership training program designed to share with participants practical ways to consciously lead themselves and positively lead and influence others.

The Three Pillars of RISE

Choice Arrows

Power of Choice

The Choices we make are about empowering ourselves to respond versus react as life comes at us. It starts by knowing of the thousands of random thoughts we have...we can learn how to choose the thoughts that will empower us.

Choice Arrows

Boldness of Character

The Character we build is knowing you are more than the surface level of the personality. you show the world, the character you sow. If you want to build a great life, build a great character. If you want to have a mediocre life, let others decide your character for you. Character is when what you say, what you do, and how you live become one.

Choice Arrows

Gift of Compassion

The Compassion you build is about the ability to see what someone is going through and a desire to help them. Think about how the world would be a better place if we just gave a little compassion to each other. Compassion allows us to understand and relate to those different from us because compassion comes from the heart...and people can sense your heart.

The Six Training Modules

All modules include engaging discussions and group or individual activities to invite learning.

Module One Logo

The Leader Within

In the Leader Within module, The RISE Project aims to help students understand that leadership is synonymous with influence. We teach that even though they may not be the captain of a sports team or student council member or currently leading a school project. We all have the power to lead because we all influence ourselves and those around us. It is important to understand that leadership is not just limited to having a title, power, or status. These things may be present in leaders, but the true essence of a leader goes much deeper than that. Leadership is about who we are, what we do, and what we give. Our ultimate goal for every student attending The RISE Project is that they leave the program with the knowledge that they are influential leaders, because each day, they consciously or unconsciously lead themselves and influence those around them. This is what we mean when we say, "Lead from where you are." We encourage our students to identify the attributes of the leaders they admire and discuss how great leaders build relationships of trust, inspire others through their integrity, and how they serve, empower and enable others to succeed. We believe that everyone is a leader because everyone has the ability to lead themselves and influence others. Therefore, the key to leadership is not just about being a leader, but also about how well we choose to lead.

Module Two Logo

The Choices We Make

The module "The Choices We Make" discusses our responsibility for the quality of our lives. We can choose our values, beliefs, and goals, and decide whether we want to lead our lives consciously or let others lead it for us. The most significant choice we make is whether we want to follow our moral compass or blindly follow the crowd. This module also discusses the benefits of having a growth mindset over a fixed one. We learn how to take a mental "PAUSE" when we feel anxious or stressed and how to become better problem solvers. Instead of reacting impulsively, we practice responding to unexpected challenges. Imagine the sense of accomplishment one could have at the end of their life, knowing they owned their days, led their life, and made a positive impact. It all starts with managing our thoughts, emotions, and feelings to make well-thought-out choices.

Module Three Logo

The Character We Build

The Character We Build module is designed to help students understand the importance of character and how it influences their lives. We emphasize that every action we take shapes the person we want to become. We also discuss the difference between personality and character. While personality is established early in life and is how we present ourselves, character is who we are at our core. It runs wide and deep and is built over a lifetime. Character determines our future and what we achieve in life. To help students better understand the importance of character, we provide a self-reflective character assessment that covers 8 Pillars of Character. These pillars include Patience, Kindness, Humility, Respect, Selflessness, Forgiveness, Honesty, and Commitment. By identifying their strengths and areas for improvement, students can work towards becoming their best selves. We also offer team "activity challenges" that allow students to experience the 8 Pillars of Character firsthand by working together towards a competitive goal. The goal of these exercises is to help students understand that leadership is character in action. By developing their character, students can lead successful lives and positively influence others. Life is what we make of it, so why not make it extraordinary? By following the tenets of strong character, we can rise above the noise and achieve greatness.

Module Four Logo

The Compassion We Give

The Compassion We Give module emphasizes the significance of showing compassion to ourselves and others. The formula we use for Compassion is Empathy + Action = Compassion. Initially, we discuss ways to be compassionate with ourselves since we can't help others until we look after ourselves. If our cup is empty, how can we help fill the cup of another? We encourage students to share what they do already and what they could do to promote their physical and emotional well-being. The module then delves into the benefits of providing compassion to ourselves, including physical, mental, and spiritual health. We also look into the importance of compassion for others and how it is necessary to lead as it helps us understand, connect, and build relationships with people who are different from us. We can choose to approach others with a spirit of compassion, learn about their story, and the path they are on. Providing compassion is a significant part of leading ourselves and helping others. "Treat others as you would want to be treated" is an excellent life mantra, but it is also an enduring practice of wise leaders. Compassion is healthy for us, good for the community, and what the world needs. Giving and receiving compassion gives life rich purpose and meaning.

Module Five Logo

Team Challenge

In this module, the RISE program participants perform a “teach back” of the key learning they garnered from the program. Throughout the program, they have experienced many engaging individual and team “activity challenges” designed to impart knowledge. The last activity challenge is for the students to creatively “teach back” the learnings they will take with them and work to apply in their lives. This challenge marks the pinnacle of their RISE journey, signifying as if they have reached the RISE mountain summit!

Module Six Logo

RISE Summit Graduation

The "Summit Graduation" event of the RISE project is a fun and memorable one. We conclude our time with the students by engaging them in a unique and entertaining activity. This activity requires each student to reflect on the program's three main teachings - the Power of Choice, Boldness of Character, and Gift of Compassion. They are encouraged to think about how these teachings can help them create a successful future for themselves. We end the program with a keynote speaker who summarizes the program's teachings in an inspiring and personal way. Each facilitator personally thanks the students for attending the program. To say goodbye to the students, they are asked to walk up to a rousing tune of pomp and circumstance, receive some parting gifts, and shake hands with each facilitator.

Lisa Gausman

Lisa was born and raised in Batesville Indiana. After graduating from Indiana State University, this Batesville High School grad began her teaching and coaching career in Indianapolis, where she received the Golden Apple award for her innovative teaching with the roller coaster project and built up their Track & Cross-Country program to a State Runner-Up title.

In 2006, Lisa and her high school sweetheart Tony, and their 4 children moved back to Batesville to reinvest in the community and school that raised her. She is involved in the Batesville Parks Department, Interact Club, Skatepark Advocate, coaches Cross-Country and Track and is involved in various activities in her church.

As a yes woman - Lisa would never pass up the opportunity for an adventure or challenge - whether it's climbing a mountain, giving back through service, flash mob dancing or traveling across the country. She believes that every moment is an opportunity to be present and to live wholeheartedly with whatever she is given. She always seeks opportunities to lift up those around her by fostering teamwork, collaboration, and empowering individuals to reach goals and reach their fullest potential. So, when her brother-in-law, Gary, asked her to be a part of this program she immediately jumped in!

Lisa takes the most pride in being married to her husband Tony for almost 30 years, in her 4 children and the lives they have made for themselves and most recently becoming a Grandma to her 1st Grandson, Wade.

Lisa brings unmatched energy and commitment to everything she is involved in and is a firm believer in the phrase "Live the Moment."

Lisa Tuveson

Lisa was born and raised in Batesville, Indiana. She has her undergraduate degree from Colgate University and a Masters in Education from Boston College. She taught for several years in New England before moving back home to Indiana to start her family. Lisa and her husband, Erik, have six children. Lisa can’t imagine a better place to raise a young family than Batesville!

Lisa’s life journey has taken her down many fulfilling paths. In 2008, Lisa along with two of her closest friends started a non-profit organization called Everyone’s Child International. Everyone’s Child was a host family organization that supported children from third world countries who were in dire need of medical assistance in the United States. In 2011, she became certified as a yoga teacher and several years later she co-opened the first yoga studio in Batesville. Most recently, Lisa completed a two year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, and teaches meditation classes in her community. In addition, Lisa is the Wellness Coordinator for the Batesville Community School Cooperation where she helps students find the tools they need to regulate their nervous systems.

Lisa loves to explore the world we live in… learning about different cultures and religions from the people she meets along the way. She believes that every person has a story from which she can learn. This passion has taken her to Rishikesh, India, Ecuador, South America and The Gambia, Africa.

A favorite quote of Lisa's :
“Meditation connects you with your soul and this connection gives you access to your intuition, your heartfelt desires, your integrity, and the inspiration to create a life you love.”
- Sarah McLean

Why Rise?
Lisa is very excited to be a part of the RISE team, and she feelsfortunate that her passions align with the work does. She is passionate about helping individuals along their life’s journey… finding the resources, support and encouragement they need to navigate their way through the complexities of life with a little more ease.

Leon Smith

Smith is a native of Louisville Kentucky. He moved to Batesville, Indiana in 2014 with his wife, Meg, and their two daughters, Mimi, and Maci. Leon takes great pride in telling people he is a graduate of Louisville Trinity High School and the University of Kentucky.

Prior to moving to Batesville, Leon’s career has been almost exclusively leadership roles in college and professional athletics.  Leon played football at the University of Kentucky and shortly after his playing career ended, he was recruited to begin working in the University of Kentucky athletics department. Leon served in several roles within the UK athletics department but the majority of his career was spent serving as the Director of basketball operations and the assistant AD for men’s basketball.  In addition to his work at UK, Leon also worked for USA basketball in Colorado Springs, Colorado and he was a director at the NCAA Office in Indianapolis, where he was one of the directors, and managed 14 NCAA National Championships.

Despite his extensive career in athletics, Leon has always been drawn to working on projects that involve leadership skills or faith-based programs for youth.  He has served on the St. Louis School Athletics Board and their youth ministry committee and multiple volunteer committees for the city of Batesville. This includes a non-profit he co-founder called the Batesville Girls Basketball Association, who use the game of basketball to teach leadership and life lessons to girls grades 2-8.

Blame it on the fact that he comes from a family of southern Baptist preachers, but Leon is passionate about helping others work their way successfully through life.  You will find him to be an open book about sharing his life story for the benefit of others…especially teenagers and young adults.

Leon is the co-founder of the RISE Project.  He leads the Batesville Student- Athlete Leadership program and is working on bringing a youth foundation to the city of Batesville. He loves youth!

A favorite quote of Leon's :
If you haven’t impacted others in a positive way, then what have you really done?
